They’re big, rugged, capable, and tough, and all of those same qualities still resonate with us today as adults. In 2022, the top three best-selling vehicles in the U.S. were all pickup trucks (Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, Ram Pickup), with Ford’s F-Series holding the mantle for the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for over four decades. Over that time, pickup trucks have certainly gone through quite a metamorphosis. They have become significantly bigger, heavier, and more technologically savvy. They have also been transformed from heavy-duty work vehicles into family-friendly transports. From 1961-1979, Ford’s line of pickup trucks had a greater cab-to-bed ratio in which the cab took up 36% of the vehicle, and the bed nearly doubled that at 64%. Fast-forward to the 21st-century and those figures have completely switched places. From 2015-2021, the Ford F-150’s cab makes up 63% of the truck, with the bed shrinking down to 37%. In a study conducted by Axios, researchers found that a significant portion of modern pickup truck owners rarely, if never, use their vehicles for hauling, towing, or other typical truck stuff. Instead, they are more likely to be used for shopping, running errands, and commuting. The following results were based on answers given by 139-1,274 F-150 owners with model years 2012-2021. Experts believe that the answer to that question falls on the image that the customer is aiming to project. “Today, personality and imagery are playing an even more important role in how consumers choose which truck is right for them,” says researcher Alexander Edwards. When surveying F-150 owners in the study, they were asked what kind of characteristics they would associate with their trucks. The two most common words that popped up were “powerful” and “rugged.” Researchers believe that it is those two characteristics that many F-150 owners would like to have associated with their personal identity. No more gas stations...rotted fuel tanks, rusted tailgates and bumpers, falling off mufflers, hanging P-brake cables. All that is ugly.

If you really need to tow a very large, or very heavy trailer, you can't beat a Cummins diesel engine. This means a Dodge Ram truck, and a lot of people have a low opinion of them, but the engine is ideal for towing. I own a 1998 Ram 2500, and I've towed 8,000 pound trailers with it for at least 12,000 miles and have never had an issue. If I needed to replace it with a new one, built specifically for trailer towing, I'd spec a 3500, crew cab, 8 foot bed, with the standard 6.7 liter diesel. There's a high output version that costs $3500 more, but most people don't really need it. If I needed to tow a trailer weighing more than 8,000 pounds, especially on a 5th wheel, I'd get dual rear wheels, otherwise, singles are enough. For the basic "Tradesman" trim level, the MSRP is $61,000. It will tow up to 12,000 pounds. It has a 32 gallon fuel tank, which will get you about 350 miles towing a big trailer, or 550 miles "clean" (not towing). The engine in this truck makes up to 800 pound feet of torque and about 400 hp, which is more than enough to tow even really big RV or livestock trailers. If you are watching this video in the first place, you probably already know all the bad things about EV trucks in general, so I won't detail them here. Just keep in mind that a diesel pickup doesn't have a huge lithium battery that will wear out and have to be replaced at maybe 150,000 miles, and likely cost at least $20,000, although no one really knows for sure yet, because EV's haven't been around long enough for them to start failing yet. The only gripe I have about new diesel pickup trucks is that you can no longer get them with manual transmissions (after 2018), which I've always felt were a better choice for trailer towing than automatics. Replacing a worn out clutch in a Dodge with a cummins diesel is about $1500, compared to $6,000 at least, to replace a worn out 8 speed automatic in these new trucks. EV trucks and Vans have a niche where they work well: local delivery where the vehicle will not be towing heavy trailers, and most of the driving will be on city streets at lower speeds that don't deplete the battery as quickly.

Tesla does not spend on R&D... they spend on Elon bonus. As you suggest, it looks doomed.

"Android is terrible" is something you hear from the following 3 types of people - 1. Those who had an Android phone in like 2009-10 and then switched to iphone shortly after, which was the objectively superior device at the time. Then person # 1 goes on to compare every iphone they get for the rest of time to the memory of that garbage HTC Desire they had in 2009. 2. Those who had $50 pre-paid Android phones prior to getting an iphone. They're *usually* not tech savvy and don't know that their budget Android "food stamp phone" is not nearly the best that Android has to offer. 3. They never had an Android themselves, but they see their friends and family using laggy budget Android phones, and again they confidently think that must be the best that Android has to offer. Moral of the story is.....I have way too much time on my hands today to type this. Seriously though, I hear this iphone superiority sh*t all the time. I know Rich made a joke and doesn't really care like those who think their iphone is a status symbol, and call others who don't have an iphone a peasant. lol. Anyway, these are just my opinions......also known as facts due to an abundance of personal experience :)

Hi Rich, can you help? My 2020 I Pace entered the service Department in Frisco Texas, on October 2023. For multiple traction battery failures. It’s still there today waiting for another battery module. Every time one is replaced, another one fails during the test drive. JLR North America stated that it Qualifies for a repurchase and opened a case for approval. Eighteen days later. I got a call with an offer of a $4,000 credit towards the purchase of another Jaguar I Pace. JLR Frisco doesn’t want an I pace that is in service for battery failures. The vehicle has under 37,000 miles, and is in new condition, however it is worthless until the traction battery issue is resolved. JLR North America stated that their is no escalation process. Take the in store credit or seek outside arbitration. The vehicle is still under the manufacturers full warranty. I have reached out to a few famous automotive RUclipsrs, because the world needs to know JLR’s process for failing Vehicles that are under full manufacturers warranty.
